  • What amenities are available onboard your boat?

    We offer a clean and enclosed vacuflush toilet, air conditioning, a professional fighting chair, GPS, fishfinder, Lee's outriggers, and tuna tubes (when bait are biting). Guests are responsible for bringing their own food and drinks. An cooler with ice is available onboard to keep your items chilled.

  • What's included in the trip price with Skillet Sportfishing?

    Our trips include rods, reels, and tackle (130 class Shimano reels), live bait (when available), lures, the expertise of our first mate, and the experience of our captain.

  • Is this a shared or private fishing charter?

    Our charters are private!  No sharing the boat with strangers – just you, your group, and the thrill of the Kona fishing experience!

  • What is your cancellation policy?

    You can cancel or modify your booking up to 3 days before the trip date, free of charge. If you cancel or modify your booking later, or fail to show up, you'll forfeit 100% of your payment.

  • Do you offer food and drinks on your charters?

    No, we do not provide food and drinks on our charters. Guests are responsible for bringing their own provisions. A cooler with ice is available onboard to keep your items chilled.


  • Can I bring alcohol on the fishing trip?

    We welcome guests who choose to bring and consume alcohol responsibly. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone on board, we kindly ask all guests to be mindful of their consumption and follow the captain's instructions throughout the trip.


    This means:

    • Practicing moderation and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption.
    • Always prioritizing safety and following the captain's guidance.
    • Being respectful of other passengers and crew members.

    By working together, we can create a fun and safe environment for everyone to enjoy their Kona fishing adventure.


  • What fishing techniques do you use?

    We utilize heavy tackle (no fishing license required), trolling, and deep-sea fishing techniques to target various fish species.

  • What is the tipping etiquette for fishing charters?

    While tipping is not mandatory, it's a customary way to show appreciation for a great day on the water.  A customary tip for fishing charters is around 20 -25% of the trip price.

  • Are there restrooms available on the boat?

    Yes, our boat is equipped with a restroom for your convenience.

  • WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF CATCHING A FISH?

    While we utilize our expertise and knowledge to maximize your chances of success, fishing is an activity influenced by various factors, and we cannot guarantee any catches.

  • What variety of fish can I potentially catch?

    You can potentially catch a variety of exciting species, including Mahi Mahi, Marlin (Black, Blue, Striped), Spearfish (Shortbill), Tuna (Bigeye, Skipjack, Yellowfin), and Ono. Check out our monthly fishing summaries to see what typically bites during the month you plan to visit. 

  • Can I keep the fish I catch on a Kona sport fishing trip?

    Skillet Sportfishing follows responsible fishing practices and adheres to local regulations. We offer the following policy:

    • Upon request, we will clean and cut up a designated portion of the catch per charter, providing enough fish for each guest to enjoy a few meals while on the island.
    • Ahi (Yellowfin Tuna) exceeding 100 pounds remains with the boat.
    • Blue Marlin over 100 pounds is strictly catch and release.
  • Is this a family-friendly experience?

    Absolutely! Families are encouraged to join our fishing charters. The calm seas around Kona generally provide a great experience for families with children. However, please note that due to safety regulations and the physical demands of the activity, we require that children be at least 10 years old.

  • Are there any age or skill level requirements for Kona sport fishing?

    Passengers on Skillet Sportfishing charters must be 10 years of age or older. While prior fishing experience is not mandatory, some basic knowledge and ability to follow instructions are helpful..


  • How many people can go on a Kona fishing charter with Skillet Sportfishing?

    Our charters are limited to 6 passengers of any age, as per US Coast Guard regulations. No exceptions are possible.

  • Does the captain have the authority to end the trip early?

    Yes, the captain has the ultimate responsibility for the safety and well-being of everyone on board. This includes the authority to stop the trip at any time for various reasons, such as:

    • Inclement weather that could pose a safety hazard.
    • Unsafe sea conditions that could compromise the comfort and control of the vessel.
    • Unruly passenger behavior that disrupts the enjoyment and safety of others on board.

    The captain's primary concern is ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Their decisions are based on their experience and judgment of the situation.

  • Do I need a fishing license?

    You do not need a separate fishing license for offshore fishing with Skillet Sportfishing, at this time.

  • What is the best time of year to go fishing in Kona, Hawaii?

    Kona offers good fishing year-round, but peak seasons vary depending on the species. June through October is generally considered the prime time for Marlin, while November through March sees a higher abundance of Mahi Mahi.   • What should I bring on my fishing trip?

    Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, comfortable clothing, and appropriate footwear.

    Yes! The Big Island of Hawaii offers fantastic fishing opportunities. You can fish from the shore or join a charter that takes you deep-sea fishing in the surrounding Pacific waters.
